Did You Know That We Have 2 Hearts?
Share
When most of us think of the heart, we picture the physical organ — the steady beat that keeps us alive. But in Ceremony, and in the wisdom of many traditions, we come to recognise that we actually have two hearts.
The Physical Heart
Our physical heart works tirelessly, pumping blood and oxygen throughout the body. It keeps us alive in the most literal way.
When we sit with cacao, this physical heart is nourished deeply. Cacao is rich in magnesium, antioxidants, and natural vasodilators, which increase blood flow and soften tension in the cardiovascular system. It’s no wonder people describe cacao as “heart medicine” — it tends directly to the rhythms and wellbeing of our physical heart.
The Energetic Heart
Beyond the physical lies the energetic heart — what many traditions call the heart centre or Anahata chakra. This is where we experience love, compassion, grief, joy, and connection.
When we prepare cacao with intention, before we even take the first sip, we are already opening this energetic heart. Cacao calls us into presence. It invites us to slow down, clear our space, breathe deeply, and connect with ourselves in reverence.
Energetically, cacao:
-
Opens the heart centre — softening walls built by stress, fear, or trauma.
-
Raises the frequency of love — helping us attune to compassion, unity, and connection.
-
Releases heaviness — supporting us to move grief or stagnant emotions through the heart space.
-
Invites joy and wonder — bringing us back to childlike curiosity, laughter, and openness.
Cacao as a Bridge
This is why cacao is often called a “bridge.” It connects the physical with the spiritual, the body with the soul, the seen with the unseen.
When we drink cacao with intention, it nourishes the physical heart with nutrients and the energetic heart with love. It brings us into coherence, where body and spirit align — where love can flow freely through us and into the world around us.
A Ritual of Love
Every Ceremony with cacao is an opportunity to honour both hearts.
The physical — steady, strong, alive.
The energetic — expansive, radiant, connected.
Cacao doesn’t just change how we feel for a moment. It shifts how we live, mother, create, and connect. It reminds us that love is not something we chase — it is something we become.
✨ Next time you sit with your cup of cacao, take a moment to honour both hearts. Feel the physical beat within your chest, and then tune into the energetic pulse that connects you with all of life.
This is the gift of cacao: tending both hearts, so that love can be felt all around.
